Pet & Assistance Animal Policy

The SilverLining Foundation Inc. is committed to providing safe, inclusive, and supportive housing while complying with all applicable fair housing laws.

Assistance Animals (Service & Emotional Support):
Assistance animals are permitted in all housing units, regardless of pet restrictions. No fees or deposits will be charged. Verification may be requested in accordance with federal guidelines.

Service Animals Definition:
A dog trained to perform a task for a person with a disability.

Your policy:

• Always allowed

• No pet rent

• No deposits

•  No breed restrictions

What we  ask:

• Is this a service animal required due to a disability?

• What task is it trained to perform?

Service/ESA animals can be denied If:

• The animal is aggressive

• Causes property damage

• Poses direct threat to others

• Owner fails to control it

Emotional Support Animals (ESA)

Definition:
Provides emotional/mental support (not task-trained)

Our Policy:

• Allowed with documentation

• No pet rent

• No pet deposit

What's required:

Letter from:

• • Licensed therapist

  • Doctor

  • Mental health professional

Shared Housing Units:
Due to the communal living environment, personal pets are generally not permitted. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis. Assistance animals are always permitted.

Limit to: 1 small service pet per resident 

Why:

• Shared kitchens

• Allergies

• Safety with vulnerable residents

Rules:

• Must not disturb others

• Must stay in private room or controlled areas

• No aggressive behavior

• Owner responsible for ALL cleaning

Family Housing Units:
Households may be permitted to have up to two (2) pets, subject to size, behavior, and property guidelines. Pet deposits and monthly pet fees may apply.

Fees (ONLY for regular pets):

• Pet deposit: $150–$300

• Monthly pet rent: $15–$35

Resident Responsibilities:
All residents must ensure animals are properly cared for, controlled, and do not interfere with the safety, comfort, or well-being of others.

UnIVERSAL RULES (APPLY TO ALL)

Behavior Rules:

• No aggressive animals

• No excessive noise

• Must be house-trained

Care Requirements

• Vaccinated

• Flea/tick control

• Proper waste disposal

Damage Responsibility:

Resident pays for:

• • flooring damage

  • odor removal

  • repairs

*The Foundation reserves the right to remove any animal that poses a direct threat, causes significant property damage, or violates this policy.
